Why Join Little Hikers?

If you pause and think back to your own childhood, chances are your most magical memories didn’t happen in front of a screen—they happened outside. Maybe it was catching fireflies at dusk, digging in the sand, climbing trees, or splashing in puddles. These are the moments that stay with us—the ones filled with curiosity, joy, and wonder.

At Little Hikers Long Island, our mission is to give today’s children those same magical experiences in nature, while helping families reconnect with each other and the world around them. We created this program to support children’s development in a way that’s joyful, natural, and rooted in discovery. Little Hikers is a chance for kids ages 2–6 and their caregivers to slow down, get outside, and discover the magic of nature together.

What We Do:

Each session begins with a short, welcoming circle time where we introduce the nature topic of the day—like butterflies, worms, birds, or trees. Then we head out for a kid-friendly hike, shovels, binoculars, or magnifying glasses in hand, to explore the woods, flip over logs, dig in the dirt, and look for clues from nature. We follow the kids’ pace and curiosity. We wrap up with a simple craft or a nature-inspired game—sometimes even puddle jumping if it rains!

The Benefits of Joining Little Hikers Long Island:

1. Nature Makes Learning Fun

Children love to explore—and they learn best through doing. Whether it’s spotting a ladybug, watching a worm wriggle, or painting rocks like bugs, every moment is a chance to discover, question, and grow. These hands-on experiences spark a natural love for learning.

2. Stronger Bodies, Healthier Habits

Running, climbing, balancing, digging—it’s all part of our “curriculum.” Physical play in nature builds strength, coordination, and confidence, and it lays the foundation for lifelong health.

3. Boosts Mental Well-Being

Nature has a calming effect, even for little ones. Outdoor time helps children feel more grounded, focused, and happy. The peaceful setting gives them room to breathe and just be themselves.

4. Builds Curiosity & Critical Thinking

Nature is filled with tiny mysteries—tracks in the mud, holes in the leaves, bugs under rocks. We encourage kids to ask questions, look closely, and problem-solve, helping them build essential thinking skills in a playful way.

5. Confidence Through Challenge

From holding a roly-poly for the first time to balancing across a log, every small achievement builds self-esteem. It’s amazing to see children light up with pride after facing a tiny fear or making a new discovery.

6. Social and Emotional Growth

Sharing tools, working together to build a fort, comforting a friend who’s nervous about bugs—these moments build teamwork, empathy, and emotional resilience. We also practice adapting to the weather, helping kids grow more flexible and brave.

7. Connection with Your Child

Little Hikers gives parents and caregivers the chance to slow down and be part of the journey. You’ll witness your child’s growth firsthand, enjoy meaningful moments together, and make memories that truly matter.

8. A Welcoming Community

When you join Little Hikers, you’re also joining a growing community of like-minded families who value outdoor time, childhood wonder, and nature-based learning. Friendships blossom—between kids and between parents, too.

9. Happy, Healthy Kids

Time in nature supports immunity, better sleep, physical activity, and emotional balance. But most of all—it brings joy. We see it in the muddy boots, the wide smiles, the curious questions, and the giggles on the trail.

10. Flexible for Your Family

Life is busy—we get it. That’s why our program offers seasonal sessions and weekday or weekend options to fit your schedule. Whether you join us for a single season or year-round, you’ll always be welcome on the trail.

What Makes Us Different:

Little Hikers is rooted in the belief that nature is the best classroom. Unlike more structured programs, we allow children to take the lead. There’s no pressure to perform, no expectations to sit still—just gentle guidance, space to explore, and opportunities to grow through real-life experiences.

We draw inspiration from nature schools and forest school, where learning is outdoors, sensory-rich, and centered on the whole child. Our program supports cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development through hands-on adventure.

Childhood is meant for climbing, digging, splashing, and discovering. Because real learning lives under the trees and in the wonder of the world around us.

Give your child the chance to fall in love with nature, build confidence, and learn through wonder. Let’s explore the world one tiny footprint at a time—and rediscover the magic of childhood, together!
