Little Hikers Long Island offers a 1.5-hour hands-on outdoor program designed for scout troops ages 2–10 to explore nature, complete badge-related activities, and engage in fun, educational experiences at West Hills County Park.

Each session includes:

Circle Time: Learn about the nature or bug topic of the day.

Nature Walk: Explore the trails using magnifying glasses or binoculars, observe and discuss what we see with our senses, practice trail safety, and focus on finding the topic of the day.

Hands-On Activity or Craft: Build a wormarium, create a birdhouse, try ice painting or melting ice experiments, paint a birdhouse, or do tree bark rubbings. All craft supplies are provided.

Nature & Outdoor Exploration Badges

Bug/Bug Study Badge – learning about insects and their habitats

Worm Study Badge – exploring worms

Plant Study Badge / Tree & Leaf Badge – identifying trees, leaves, seeds, or plant parts

Bird Study – observing birds, making birdhouses

Animal Habitats Badge – learning how animals survive in different environments (dens, nests, winter adaptation)

Outdoor Skills / Nature Explorer Badge – trail safety, observing nature, using tools like magnifying glasses or binoculars

Weather & Seasons Badge – exploring ice, snow, or seasonal changes

Senses in Nature Badge – using touch, sight, smell, and hearing to explore outdoors

Craft or Hands-On Activity Badges

Nature Crafts Badge – creating birdhouses, painting nature-themed items, making leaf or bark rubbings

Environmental Stewardship Badge – cleaning up trails, building habitats, planting seeds

Science in Nature Badge – ice experiments, melting snow, observing decomposition

Important Details:

Little Hikers provides the experience and activities to help scouts work toward badges, but official badge sign-off and issuance must be done by the scout troop leader or council.

This program is not a drop-off — adults or troop leaders must be present.
